This specimen was lot 6174 in Künker sale 336 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €420 (about US$550 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PORTUGAL, KÖNIGREICH, Ludwig I. 1861-1889. 5.000 Reis 1883, Lissabon. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of Portugal, Louis I, 1861-89, 5,000 réis of 1883. Extremely fine.)"
This type was struck in Lisbon 1878-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 5000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.
Recorded mintage: 23,000.
Specification: 8.87 g, 0.917 fine gold.
