This specimen was lot 1578 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €400 (about US$587 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PORTUGAL, Luis Ier (1861-1889), AV 5000 reis, 1878. Superbe. (kingdom of Portugal, Louis I, 1861-89, gold 5,000 réis of 1878. Extremely fine.)"
This type was struck in Lisbon 1867-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 10,000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.
Recorded mintage: 8,400.
Specification: 8.86 g, 0.917 fine gold, .261 troy oz AGW.
