Künker sale 354, lot 5057

This specimen was lot 5057 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €400 (about US$557 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL, KÖNIGREICH, Ludwig I. 1861-1889. 5.000 Reis 1877, Lissabon. 8,13 g Feingold. GOLD. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of Portugal, Louis I, 1861-89, five thousand réis of 1877, Lisbon mint. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck in Lisbon 1867-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 10,000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.

Recorded mintage: 9,400, a scarce date.

Specification: 8.87 g, 0.917 fine gold.
