This specimen was lot 2424 in Goldberg sale 34 (Beverly Hills, February 2006), where it sold for $300. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal. 5000 Reis, 1872. Louis I. Head left. Reverse: Crowned arms. PCGS graded AU-55." This type was struck in Lisbon 1867-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 10000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.
Recorded mintage: 28,000 (a common date).
Specification: 8.87 g, 0.917 fine gold, .261 troy oz AGW.
