This specimen was lot 8737 in Ponterio sale 151 (Baltimore, November 2009), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 10,000 Reis, 1879. Light surface marks, prooflike. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." This type was struck in Lisbon 1878-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 5,000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.
Recorded mintage: 35,651 (the most common date).
Specification: 17.73 g, 0.917 fine gold, .522 troy oz AGW, 29 mm diameter.
