H3067-32181r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32181 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal: Luiz I 200 Reis 1879 VF30 NGC, Lisbon mint. The lowest mintage date of the type, with only 5,050 examples produced. The NGC Census supports this low number, as this is the only example presently certified by them, with none certified by PCGS. For closest comparison, we sold an 1867-dated 200 Reis in inferior condition back in Sale #458 (Lot #52093) for $1,800 hammer. This issue, with a mintage of roughly half that date's number, should be worth more and yield significant interest from the collecting community." This type was struck in Lisbon 1865-80, 1886-88 and is one of the more common of Portuguese silver coins. Silver hundred and five hundred réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of gold issues. This is a scarce date.

Recorded mintage: 5,050.

Specification: 5 g, 0.917 fine silver, .147 troy oz ASW, 24 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 512.
