This specimen was lot 31498 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $1,703.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Luiz I gold 10000 Reis 1878 MS64 NGC, Lisbon mint. A striking example of this first year of issue with flashy surfaces, well-struck detail, and a premium grade to match." This type was struck in Lisbon 1878-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 5000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.
