This type was struck in Lisbon 1867-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 10000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues. This specimen was lot 3693 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 425 CHF (about US$507 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PORTUGAL, Luis I. 1861-1889 5000 Reis 1871. Lissabon. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of Portugal, Louis I, 1861-89, 5,000 réis of 1871, Lisbon mint. Extremely fine.)"
Recorded mintage: 47,000 (a common date).
Specification: 8.87 g, 0.917 fine gold, .261 troy oz AGW, 23.5 mm diameter, this specimen 8.79 g.
