This specimen was lot 34293 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $810. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal: Luiz I gold 5000 Reis 1888 MS63 NGC, Lisbon mint. A mirrored and glossy flan, sharply struck with frosty devices, worthy of a Prooflike designation." This type was struck in Lisbon 1867-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Despite the tiny mintage, this date is awarded no premium. Gold 2000 and 10,000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.

Recorded mintage: 4,800.

Specification: 8.87 g, 0.917 fine gold, .261 troy oz AGW, 23.5 mm diameter.
