This specimen was lot 1492 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 5,000 Reis, 1889. NGC MS-62. Mintage of only 9,000 pieces. Sharply struck and very attractive." This type was struck in Lisbon 1867-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 10000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.

Recorded mintage: 9,000.

Specification: 8.87 g, 0.917 fine gold, .261 troy oz AGW, 23.5 mm diameter.
