Künker sale 264, lot 3289

This specimen was lot 3289 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,067 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH Ludwig I. 1861-1889. 10.000 Reis 1889, Lissabon. 16,26 g Feingold. GOLD. Nur 4.400 Exemplare geprägt. Sehr attraktives Exemplar, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (kingdom of Portugal, Luis I, 1861-89, 10,000 réis of 1889, Lisbon mint. Only 4,400 pieces struck, very attractive, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck in Lisbon 1878-89 and is one of the more common of Portuguese gold coins. Gold 2000 and 5000 réis bearing this portrait also exist along with a series of silver issues.

Recorded mintage: 4,400.

Specification: 17.73 g, 0.917 fine gold, .522 troy oz AGW.
