Portugal 1889 50 reis
This specimen was lot 75546 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 50 Reis, 1889. Lisbon Mint. Luiz I. NGC MS-64. A flashy little minor that presents argent surfaces with wispy hints of russet overtone. Stalwart for the near Gem level and certain to satisfy both the series specialist and more broadly focused collectors who desire a premium example of the type." This type, the size of a half dime, was struck in Lisbon 1874-80, 1886-89. King Luis ruled 1861-89. There was an issue of silver fifty réis during the reign of Carlos (KM 536, 1893) after which the coin was converted to copper-nickel.
