The first specimen was lot 36467 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 40 Reis, 1830. Lisbon Mint. Miguel I. NGC MS-64 Brown. Tied with two other examples as the finest certified by NGC." This type, a forty réis or pataco was struck 1829-33 and is scarce in nice condition. The denomination was terminated in 1833 prior to the decimal reform of 1836. It is very scarce in nice condition as the large, heavy coin received all kinds of abuse. King Michael was a usurper who was finally driven out in 1834 in favor of his niece, queen Maria II.
Recorded mintage: 1,783,000.
Specification: 38.2 g, bronze, 36.5 mm diameter.
