This specimen was lot 72361 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 40 Reis (Pataco), 1831. Lisbon Mint. Miguel I. NGC Unc Details--Cleaned. Despite the noted cleaning, which is rather minor and inoffensive, this charming specimen provides a level of detail and overall quality that is SCARCELY observed in the type." This type (pataco) was struck 1829-33 by the usurper Michael I. It is not rare but very scarce in collectible condition. Decimal coinage was introduced in 1837.
