Portugal 1829 40 reis
The first specimen was lot 3041 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 160 (about US$211 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"40 Reis 1829. Lissabon. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of Portugal, forty réis of 1829, Lisbon mint, extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was part of lot 36140 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), which sold for $2,820. The catalog description[2] noted, "Twenty-three piece lot of Portugal and Colonies, (ca. 1521-1930) as follows, issues from Angola, Brazil, Mozambique, Portugal, Portuguese India, and St. Thomas and Prince. Included are (2) Portugal gold coins, 400 Reis 1736 and 2,000 Reis 1859, as well as several other scarce and rare issues. Grades from VG to AU. A lot that demands close inspection, but promises good benefit from those willing to spend the time to view. A very few pieces with cleaning, or slight problems." This type was struck 1828-29 only. The denomination was terminated in 1833 prior to the decimal reform of 1836. It is very scarce in nice condition as the large, heavy coin received all kinds of abuse. King Michael was a usurper who was finally driven out in 1834 in favor of his niece, queen Maria II.
