Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 1511
the reverse image is rotated 90°. The large rosette next to "IN HOC" should be at the top.

This specimen was lot 1511 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 400 Reis, 1830. Lisbon Mint. Miguel. NGC MS-66. A coin that defies explanation based on its grade; these types are never found in condition approaching this Gem. A hint of almond tone hugs the lustrous surfaces in a display of majesty and regality. This example is the highest graded specimen by NGC and is tied with one other from PCGS for the honor. A coin the winning bidder will be enthralled to have in their collection." This coin is the closest thing to a crown issued by Portugal during this period. This type was issued 1828-34. The 400 réis or pinto was struck until 1837, when Portuguese currency was reformed and decimalized. At that time, this coin was replaced by a 1000 réis piece weighing 29.6 grams. King Michael was a usurper who was finally driven out in 1834 in favor of his niece, queen Maria II.

Recorded mintage: 29,000.

Specification: 14.7 g, 0.917 fine silver, 35 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-386; Dav-263.
