Sincona sale 38, lot 1786

This specimen was lot 1786 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,439 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Miguel I. 1828-1834 Meia Peca 1830. Lissabon. Sehr schön. (kingdom of Portugal, Miguel I, 1828-34, half peça of 1830, Lisbon mint. Very fine.)"

This type was struck 1830-31 only by the usurper Michael I. Originally valued at 6400 réis, the peça was valued upwards to 7500 réis in 1826. The last peça was struck in 1835 during the reign of Maria II; decimal coinage was introduced in 1837.

Recorded mintage: 525.

Specification: 7.15 g, .917 gold, .210 troy oz AGW, 25 mm diameter; this specimen 6.83 g.
