Portugal 1752 400 reis
This specimen was lot 34513 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $870. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal: Jose I gold 400 Reis 1752 MS65 NGC, Lisbon mint. A lustrous gem selection boasting clear detail and a balanced strike. Likely near the top of the surviving population for this type, if not so." This type is listed for 1752, 1760, 1768-76 and is probably scarcer than the SCWC indicates. Varieties exist with the king's name spelled "IOSE" (shown here) or "JOSE". The gold 400 réis was called a pinto and traded for 480 réis. The silver 400 réis was called a cruzado novo.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
