This specimen was lot 47390 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 400 Reis, 1762. Lisbon Mint. Jose I. PCGS Genuine--Graffiti, VF Details. JOSEPHUS." This type was struck 1762-63, 1766-68 and 1774-75 and this is a better date. The king's name also comes spelled "IOSEPHUS" (KM 255.1). The gold 400 réis was called a pinto and traded for 480 réis. The silver 400 réis was called a cruzado novo. Altho this type has a Davenport number, it's too small to be called a crown.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 14.7 g, 0.917 fine silver, 36 mm diameter.
