This specimen was lot 43258 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. Escudo, 1751. Lisbon Mint. Jose I. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. 'JOSEPHUS' on legend." This type is catalogued in the SCWC as a one escudo even tho it is about 6% heavier than a Spanish escudo. It was struck in Lisbon 1751, 1764-68 and 1775-76 and scarcer than catalog values indicate. The king's name was spelled "JOSEPHUS" (as here) or "IOSEPHUS" (KM 245.2).
