This specimen was lot 24536 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $4,465. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II gold 4000 Reis 1689, MS64 NGC, a most attractive coin with impeccably sharp details and full glowing mint brilliance. Rare and highly desirable in this superior condition." This type was struck 1688-1706 and has a fairly low value in the SCWC but is seldom seen. Similar coins were struck in Brazil but bear mintmarks instead of rosettes next to the Maltese cross.
