This specimen was lot 43249 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 400 Reis, 1690-PP. Lisbon Mint. Pedro II. PCGS MS-62." The 400 réis or pinto was struck until 1837, when Portuguese currency was reformed and decimalized. This type was struck in Porto 1688-98 and 1702 and is more common than the Lisbon issue. Davenport includes it in his volume, as it is the largest Portuguese silver coin, but it is too small to be classed a thaler or crown.
