Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75603
SB923-75603r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75603 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 400 Reis (Cruzado), 1689. Lisbon Mint. Pedro II. PCGS MS-64. Fully uncirculated, with gentle silky luster flowing beneath unimpaired cabinet tone. A wholly desirable example and exemplary for the issue." This type was struck at Lisbon and Porto 1688-92. Unusually, the Lisbon product is scarcer than that of Porto. It is one of the earliest machine-struck coins of Portugal, which commenced using the screw press about 1677. This coin is the closest thing to a crown issued by Portugal during this period. The 400 réis or pinto was struck until 1837, when Portuguese currency was reformed and decimalized.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 17.3 g, 0.917 fine silver, 35 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dav-4390; KM-154.2; Gomes-75.05.
