This type was struck 1686-1706 during the reign of king Peter II (1683-1706). It is one of the earliest machine-struck coins of Portugal, which commenced using the screw press about 1677. The 200 réis was struck until 1822. In 1837, the Portuguese currency was reformed and decimalized. At that time, this coin was replaced by a 500 réis piece weighing 12.5 grams.
