Sincona sale 4, lot 4434

This specimen was lot 4434 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011) where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Pfalz-Neuburg, Herzogtum Wolfgang Wilhelm, 1614-1653. Taler 1623, Stockau. Geharnischtes Brustbild mit grosser Halskrause nach rechts. Rv. Gekröntes Wappen, umgeben von der Vliesordenskette. Fast vorzüglich. (Germany, Duchy of Pfalz-Neuberg, Wolfgang Wilhelm, 1614-53, thaler of 1623, Stockau mint. Obverse: armored bust with large ruffed collar to right; reverse: crowned arms with the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece around. Nice extremely fine)."

This type is one of a series featuring the duke in a ruffed collar (Dav-7158 thru Dav-7167) struck 1622-26. In 1685, the heir succeeded to Pfalz-Simmern as well as Pfalz-Neuberg and the two were merged into Pfalz once again.
