Pfalz-Neuburg 1623 thaler Dav-7162A
This specimen was lot 31452 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States. Pfalz-Neuburg. Wolfgang Wilhelm Taler 1623 MS64 NGC. Sensational in its preservation with a bold strike, intact reeded collar, and nary a trace of wear. There is an attractive olive hue that pervades the glossy fields. The only straight-graded example at NGC and it's hard to fathom a nicer extant example." The count also issued KM 46/Dav-7160, KM 47/Dav-7161, KM 48/Dav-7162, KM 50/Dav-7163 in 1623, all very similar to this thaler. They vary in the position of the date, the arrangement of the order chain or the shape of the shield on the reverse. The SCWC prices them all the same. In 1685, the heir succeeded to Pfalz-Simmern as well as Pfalz-Neuberg and the two were merged into Pfalz once again.
