Sed36-1366r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1366 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, 1 real, 1828 JM, NGC MS 63, "top pop," ex-O'Brien. Blazingly lustrous with choice strike and pristine surfaces all over, slightly off-center strike with rims to match, tied with one other for finest in the NGC census. Pedigreed to the John O'Brien Collection, with his tag." This type was struck 1826-1840 at the Lima mint and 1827-31 at Cuzco. The date is listed in the SCWC as common, though all Peruvian minors are scarcer in nice condition than the catalog values would indicate. Assayer JM is recorded for 1825-31. It was legal tender in the United States until 1857 for 12½¢.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-145.1.
