Sed36-1365r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1365 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $6,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Cuzco, 1 real, 1828 G, NGC MS 62, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-O'Brien. Strong luster with faint rainbow toning, nice strike except for parts of rims, the finest known for this very scarce early date. Pedigreed to the John O'Brien Collection (stated on label), with his tag." This type was struck 1826-1840 at the Lima mint and 1827-31 at Cuzco. The date is listed in the SCWC as common, though all Peruvian minors are scarcer in nice condition than the catalog values would indicate. Assayer G is recorded for 1827-31. It was legal tender in the United States until 1857 for 12½¢.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-145.2.
