Peru 1796-L IJ 4 reales
This specimen was lot 72109 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1796-L IJ. Lima Mint. Charles IV. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. A highly attractive coin with an excellent portrait. Some cleaning is evident on the obverse, with a spot affecting the last digit of the date. However, the coin is wonderfully well preserved and endowed with a beautiful warm toning that easily outweighs the coin's defects. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type is listed for Peru 1791-1808 and is scarce, especially in choice condition. Unlike the eight reales, the four reales was not hoarded. Assayer IJ is listed for 1787-1803. The fineness was lowered from .903 to .896 in 1785.
