This specimen was lot 1292 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 1 escudo, Charles IV, 1796 IJ, NGC UNC details / rev spot removed, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Almenara. Spectacular luster and sharpness of strike, the rims slightly weak (as made), with minor natural flaw in front of face and light scratch on head, area of light marks to right of crown on reverse, still far above the usual quality for this type. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection." This type was struck 1792-1808 for king Charles IV. He succeeded Charles III in 1788, but as there were delays in getting punches for the new bust out to the Latin American mints, the old hubs were used with the new king's name thru 1791. Assayer IJ is recorded for 1787-1803.
