This specimen was lot 31273 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles IV gold Escudo 1796 Mo-TH MS63 NGC, Mexico City mint. Choice Mint State with frosty devices and full mint bloom. A most attractive type coin, rare and eminently desirable in this select quality. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. The type was struck 1792-1808 and is the most plentiful of all the colonial escudos.
