Peru 1796-L JI 1/4 real
This specimen was lot 51205 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 1/4 Real, 1796-LIMAE JI. Lima Mint. Charles IV. NGC AU Details--Corrosion. Variety with downward-curving lion's tongue. This date from this three-year transitional type is the RAREST of Lima's milled Cuartillos. While corroded from saltwater damage, the coin retains clear visibility of the date, mintmark in monogram, and the transposed assayer's initials. From the EMO Collection." Two types of cuartillas were struck at the beginning of the series: KM 99 (portrait type) struck 1792-96 and KM 102.1 (lions/castles without value, shown here) struck 1794-96. Both are scarce compared to the regular lions and castles type struck 1796-1821.
