Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 51380

This specimen was lot 51380 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/4 Real, 1796-So. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. NGC EF Details--Stained. A VERY SCARCE issue with deep, charcoal-hued tone topping the fields. A scratch behind the rampant lion is noted for the sake of accuracy. From the EMO Collection." The Santiago mint experimented with several designs for the quarter real 1790-93 before settling on the familiar lion and castle type in 1796. It is one of a series minted 1792-1808 for Charles IV and 1810-17 for Ferdinand VII. A hoard of uncirculated 1817's has been dispersed but the other dates are tough to find.

Recorded mintage: 63,000.
