Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 51206

This specimen was lot 51206 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 1/4 Real, 1796-L. Lima Mint. Charles IV. NGC MS-62. This lustrous and fresh 1/4 Real is entirely problem-free. All detail is well-presented on this coin, making it a make a highly appealing representative for the date. From the EMO Collection." Two types of cuartillas were struck at the beginning of the series: KM 99 (portrait type) struck 1792-96 and KM 102.1 (lions/castles without value) struck 1794-96. Both are scarce compared to the regular lions and castles type struck 1796-1821, of which the first date is shown here.
