This specimen was lot 44352 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Escudos, 1796-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. PCGS AU-50. A charming and lightly handled survivor featuring the bust of the predecessor of Charles IV, his father--Charles III." The specimen was one of a series struck 1791-1808 during the reign of Charles IV. It bears Charles' name and the bust of Charles III, who died in 1788. The bust of Charles IV appears on the four escudos but not the eight escudos. This type is fairly common for Spanish colonial gold.
