This specimen was lot 23412 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,588.60. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold 8 Escudos 1795-DA, nice lustrous AU with abundant mint luster, tiny edge flaw at 4 o'clock on the obverse and faint adjustment marks. Quite attractive despite the small blemishes." This type was struck 1791-1808 and is reasonably available. Note the use of Charles III's bust and the name of Charles IV.

Recorded mintage: 43,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
