This type was struck in Madrid 1788-97, 1804-08 and in Seville 1803 and 1807. Its specification is the same as Latin American four reales yet, like most metropolitan Spanish coinage of Charles IV, it is much scarcer. The design is also distinctly different. This specimen was lot 31742 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $411.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IV 4 Reales 1796-MF, Madrid mint, AU50 NGC. Attractively toned with luster in the legends. A scarce grade for this denomination."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.896 fine silver, .390 troy oz fine silver.
