Künker sale 403, lot 1545

This specimen was lot 1545 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €14,000 (about US$18,370 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST BENEDIKT XIII., 1724-1730. Die Münzstätte Rom. Scudo d’oro del Giubileo A II/1725, Rom. Verziertes Wappen, darüber gekreuzte Schlüssel und Tiara//Die geöffnete Heilige Pforte mit Strahlen, davor vier betende Pilger, zwei davon kniend. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Papal States, Benedict XIII, 1724-30, gold scudo of the Jubilee Year 1725, Rome mint. Obverse: ornate arms, crossed keys and tiara above; reverse: the opened Holy Door with rays, four praying pilgrims in front of it, two of them kneeling. Extremely rare, minor planchet defects, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

There is a long series of silver coinage proclaiming the various Holy Years (usually years ending in "00", "25" or "50") but this seems to be the only gold coin.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.25 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3,35 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-216; Muntoni 3; Toffanin 2436/1 (RR), Ber-2561, KM 811.
