The first specimen was lot 40644 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,292. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Piastra, 1704. PCGS Genuine--Surface Tooled, EF Details Secure Holder. Clement XI (1700-21). Presentation of Jesus at the temple. Both sides show tooling." This date is a one year type struck in 1704. The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: silver, 0.917 fine. The SCWC lists the weight as 13.21 g, which is manifestly wrong; 26.75 g seems more correct.
Catalog reference: Dav-1432; KM-671; Berm-2380; Mutoni III-43.
