Papal States (1705) grosso
This specimen was lot 23101 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Grosso, AN VI (1705). Clement XI. PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. A very attractive Grosso with razor sharp design details and pleasant subtle peacock toning. From the Jasmine Collection." The piastra was discontinued in 1740 and superseded by the scudo, at which time the grosso was fixed at 1/20 of a scudo. This was the only grosso of the year. The reverse motto is taken from Psalms 68:33: "Videant pauperes, et laetentur; quaerite Deum, et vivet anima vestra" ("Let them see the poor, and rejoice; seek God, and your soul shall live.")
