Papal States 1702-II piastra Dav-1429
The first specimen was lot 3561 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 2,800 CHF (about US$3,467 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VATIKAN / KIRCHENSTAAT Clemente XI. 1700-1721. Piastra 1702 AN II, Rom. Auf die Restauration der Basilika S. Maria in Tratevere. Fast FDC-vorzüglich. (Papal States, Clement XI, 1700-21, piastra of 1702, year II, Rome mint, on the restoration of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastavere. Good extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. This issue was issued 1702 only and is scarce. The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler.
