Papal States 1700-I piastra Dav-1428
The first specimen was lot 3560 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 900 CHF (about US$1,114 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VATIKAN / KIRCHENSTAAT Clemente XI. 1700-1721. Piastra 1700, AN I, Rom. Kl. Schrötlingsfehler. Fast vorzüglich. (Papal States, Clement XI, 1700-21, piastra of 1700, year I, Rome mint. Good extremely fine.)"
Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. This issue was issued 1700 only and is scarce. The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler.
