Künker sale 403, lot 1500

This specimen was lot 1500 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €4,400 (about US$5,773 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST CLEMENS XI., 1700-1721. Die Münzstätte Rom. Piastra A III/1703, Rom. San Teodoro al Palatino. Stempelschneider Pier Paolo Borner. R Hübsche Patina, fast vorzüglich. (Papal States, Clement XI, 1700-21, piastra of the year 3, Rome mint. St. Theodore of the Palatine. Rare, handsome patina, about extremely fine.)"

Wikipedia comments, "San Teodoro (Italian for "Saint Theodore"), informally known as San Toto, is an early medieval church in Rome dedicated to the martyr and warrior saint Theodore of Amasea. Its use was given to the Eastern Orthodox community of Rome by Pope John Paul II in 2004. ...[It was] rebuilt by architect Carlo Fontana in 1703–1705 for Pope Clement XI who gave it to the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus." This piastra commemorating the reopening is rare.
