from the Stack's Bowers 2020 NYINC sale, lot 21137
Papal St SB1120-21137r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21137 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. 2 Fiorino di Camera, ND (1503-13). Rome Mint. Julius II. NGC AU-50. Obverse: IVLIVS II PONT MAX, papal coat-of-arms; Reverse: SANCTVS PETRVS ALMA ROMA, St. Peter seated left in boat, casting fishing net into the sea. A rather difficult piece to encounter, especially in such an attractive and alluring grade as the present example. A good deal of luster remains on this boldly struck specimen from Pope Julius II--a patron of Michelangelo, Bramante, and Raphael. Ex: Stack's (1/2010) Lot # 929." We believe the fiorino (florin) to be the same denomination as the goldgulden, slightly lighter than the ducat or zecchino. Friedberg records the first fiorino from 1475 and the last from the reign of Paul III (1534-49).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.78 g, 0.986 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-41; Munt-8; Berman-558.
