Künker sale 354, lot 5023

This specimen was lot 5023 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €18,000 (about US$25,051 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KIRCHENSTAAT/VATIKAN, Julius II. 1503-1513. 2 Fiorini di camera o. J. Rom. ۰ IVLIVS ۰ II ۰ LIGVR ۰ - ۰ P ۰ M ۰ Brustbild r.//° NAVIS ۰ AETERNAE ۰ SALVTIS St. Petrus und St. Andreas in Schiff auf Meer. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Papal States, Julius II, 1503-13, undated double florin. Obverse: bust right; reverse: SS. Peter and Paul in a boat on the sea. Extremely rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Friedberg records the first fiorino from 1475 and the last from the reign of Paul III (1534-49). Berman notes six different double fiorini di camera from this pontificate, including Fr-41.
