Nurnberg 1622 30 kreuzer KM-62
This specimen was lot 382 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$752 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND | Nurnberg, City. 30 Kreuzer 1622. Mit dem Münzmeisterzeichen Kreuz (Georg Nürnberger der Ältere). Kipperprägung. Sehr schön. Schrötlingsriss. (Germany, city of Nurnberg, thirty kreuzer of 1622, with the privy mark of Georg Nürnberger the elder, kipper issue. Very fine, Flan crack.)"
The opening of the Thirty Years War saw an inflationary period where many princes made handsome profits issuing debased and lightweight "kipper" coinage. There are claims that the inflation did more damage to Germany than the marauding armies. Eventually the bubble burst and the kipper coinage was recalled and melted down. Little was saved and most issues are rare today. This type is not priced in the SCWC. A regular weight half gulden also exists for 1622 (KM 41).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, probably debased, this specimen 6.94 g.
