Sincona sale 63, lot 380

This specimen was lot 380 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,253 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Nurnberg, City. Goldgulden 1622. St. Laurentius. Jahreszahl aus 1621 geändert. Selten. Vorzüglich. Prüfspur am Rand. Gewellt. (Germany, city of Nurnberg, golgulden of 1622, St. Laurence on obverse, 1622/1 overdate. Rare, Extremely fine, Test mark on edge, Wavy flan.)"

While the common populace was being foisted with the debased "kipper" coinage, the gold coinage remained stable. Users of gold coins are generally the more sophisticated merchants and government contractors who will not accept bad coins.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.25 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.20 g.

Catalog reference: KM 43, Kellner 31. Fr-1814.
