from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 11114

This specimen was lot 11114 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €2,640 (about US$2,752). The catalog description^[1] noted, "NORWAY. Krone, 1686. Kongsberg Mint. Christian V. NGC VF-35. Smooth edge variety. A more than decent example of this rare and sought emission, the first larger coin to be minted at the Kongsberg Mint. The old, greenish-grey toning hugs the devices and adds to the eye appeal. From the L. E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (private Sale - 1922)." The SCWC lists three different kroner for 1686: KM 148.1/Dav-3663, KM 157 (shown here) and KM 158. The regular type was struck 1681-95. While it is not particularly common, it is often collected in lieu of the much rarer specie dalers. This variety, with a more elaborate monogram, is rare. One specie daler was six mark or 96 skilling.
