Norway 1686 4 mark Dav-3665
This specimen was lot 11114 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €2,640 (about US$2,752). The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. Krone, 1686. Kongsberg Mint. Christian V. NGC VF-35. Smooth edge variety. A more than decent example of this rare and sought emission, the first larger coin to be minted at the Kongsberg Mint. The old, greenish-grey toning hugs the devices and adds to the eye appeal. From the L. E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (private Sale - 1922)." The SCWC lists three different kroner for 1686: KM 148.1/Dav-3663, KM 157 (shown here) and KM 158. The regular type was struck 1681-95. While it is not particularly common, it is often collected in lieu of the much rarer specie dalers. This variety, with a more elaborate monogram, is rare. One specie daler was six mark or 96 skilling.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 22.27 g, 0.672 fine silver, 39.4 mm diameter, this specimen 21.81 g.
