The first specimen was lot 3697 in Goldberg sale 104 (Los Angeles, June 2018), where it sold for $66. The catalog description[1] noted, "Canada - Newfoundland. 50 Cents, 1888. Victoria. PCGS graded Very Fine Detail (Cleaned)." The second specimen was lot 20259 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[2] noted, "Newfoundland. Victoria 50 Cents 1888, AU53 PCGS, a choice example of this low mintage date with an appealing blend of silvery-gray toning and abundant mint luster. Rare date in this superior quality." This type was struck at Heaton and London 1870-1900 for Newfoundland and is slightly heavier than the contemporary Canadian fifty cents. Struck in small numbers and exposed to long circulation, it is rare in nice condition. Proofs exist.

Recorded mintage: 20,000, a key date.

Specification: 11.78 g, 0.925 fine silver, .350 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 6.
