Newfoundland 1890 10 cents
This specimen was lot 71637 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 10 Cents, 1890. London Mint. Victoria. NGC EF-45. The surfaces are a delight, with satin smooth fields, well preserved devices, and delightful lilac and magenta gray overtones. Original mint luster flashes from the protected areas while the design peaks present very little wear for the grade and nearly complete detail. An excellent piece that warrants generous bids from discerning collectors." This specimen is a better date of a type struck in London and Birmingham in 1865, 1870-76, 1880-90, 1894-96. Canada debased her silver dimes from .925 to .800 in 1920 but Newfoundland did not follow suit until 1945. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper.
